I’m thrilled to unveil the second mural in my 100 bird mural series, Wings Across the World! This 25’x50’ mural, my largest to date, features three majestic barn owls surrounded by vibrant purple coneflowers. Located on the east wall of the historic Cotton Mill in McKinney, Texas, this piece holds a special place in my heart for many reasons.
A Personal Connection to the Cotton Mill
The Cotton Mill is more than just a canvas—it’s been a part of my journey as an artist for over 15 years. It’s where I’ve worked, created, and found sanctuary. I even had my studio there at one point, and it became my artistic refuge. Over the years, the Cotton Mill has become a hub for creativity, home to countless artists and a vibrant community that inspires growth and connection.
Adding to the magic of this space is the family of barn owls that roost at the back of the building. These graceful creatures have always fascinated me, and their presence seemed destined for this wall. Owls symbolize wisdom and clarity—qualities I strive to bring to my work and life.
The Meaning Behind the Mural
This mural isn’t just about beauty; it’s a celebration of resilience and healing. The purple coneflowers surrounding the barn owls symbolize strength and the ability to persevere in the face of adversity. These flowers are also the source of echinacea, a healing herb, adding another layer of meaning to the piece. Together, the barn owls and coneflowers tell a story of clarity, resilience, and the enduring power of nature.
Creating the Mural
Painting this mural was an incredible experience! It took me six days to complete, and having a boom lift and spray paint was a total game changer. At 25’x50’, it’s my largest mural yet, and I couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out. From the initial design to the final strokes, every step was fueled by passion and a deep connection to the Cotton Mill.
